Authentic Portugal: Europe's 'Hidden Jewel' Revisited

From Oct 13, 2020 to Oct 26, 2020 (13 nights) Print Version Status: Available

An astonishing variety of landscapes and cultural treasures await your visit. Rooted in tradition in the countryside, yet bustling with urban energy in Lisbon, Portugal really does have it all. Add in delicious food (fresh grilled fish and piri piri chicken are specialities), superb local port, amazing tiles (and more tiles), modern wineries and some seriously lovely beaches ...its no wonder I fell in love with Portugal! Join me and you too will be seduced by its subtle charms.

"I was on the recent trip to Portugal led by Maggie Hamer. I just want you to know that she is the best. She planned and implemented a trip that will provide myself and my travel companions with a lifetime of wonderful memories.

Maggie never left anything to chance, and I know she spent a great deal of time checking and rechecking every detail. This attention to detail allowed us to just enjoy our vacation without any worries. I mentioned to her that I wanted to see the Chapel of Bones while in Evora. She contacted the tour guide conducting our walking tour to ensure that he included it in his itinerary. And we all enjoyed that visit.

Maggie put up with us for 2 weeks. That deserved a medal of bravery somedays! She always conducted herself professionally, and represented your company in a way that you should be proud of, while at the same time being our friend. A tough job when it’s 24/7. Maggie is a great tour leader, a great ambassador for Today’s Woman Traveller, and I would be privileged to travel with her again. You can be sure Maggie is one reason you get repeat customers.

I hope to enjoy one of your trips again in the future."   Jan, Lindsay, Ontario (2017)

 Depart home city

As a full service travel agency, we are happy to assist you in arranging your flight and transfer details from your home city to join up with our tour. We suggest booking early to obtain the best flights and rates available.

Day 1: Tuesday, Oct 13: Arrival PORTO

Arrive into Porto and settle in to your hotel, carefully chosen for its lovely charms and its prime location (in the historic Ribeira (riverside) district) - directly overlooking the Douro River.  The vintage hotel and surrounding area are full of cafes, lovely wine bars, local music and a great atmosphere.

We will familiarize ourselves with the area and then later in the day we can meet up for a bite to eat and get to know each other.

Hotel: 4*star Pestana Vintage Porto or similar (6 nights); breakfast daily

Day 2: Wednesday, October 14 - PORTO

The waterfront city of Porto originated in the Roman Empire as a trading port named Portus Cale – often noted  as the origin of the name "Portugal".  Today, Porto shares its modern day name with its world famous commodity, Port Wine; even now you can still see the flat boat barges filled with grape barrels transported down river to the cellars.

Today’s walking tour will include the richly decorated São Francisco church with its lavish baroque interior, the iconic Ponte Luis I Bridge with details resembling the famous Eiffel Tower, and the beautifully adorned Sao Bento train station replete with stunning tile mosaics. Be sure to wear your comfy walking shoes.

DAY 3: Thursday, October 15 - PORTO - Aveiro and Costa Nova
Aveiro is known as "The Venice of Portugal"  due to its system of canals and boats somewhat similar to the gondolas of Italy's Venice. The Portuguese boats are called “Moliceiro” which is a boat that was originally used to harvest seaweed - and now transfers its riders through the many ‘streets’ of Aveiro.

The beauty of Aveiro is inseparable from the nearby Costa Nova where one is met with an abundance of brightly coloured houses; these traditional structures were built by the sea & were used by fishermen to store their fishing materials . Photographers love the way they welcome the sea with their façades painted in bright coloured stripes. There are some picturesque walking trails by the water that we can enjoy, and we will also have free time for lunch.

DAY 4: Friday, October 16 - PORTO Douro River Valley/ Port Wine country

The Douro River valley wine region is a now-famous area of north-eastern Portugal classified by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. Surrounded by mountains covered in steeply terraced vineyards this unique region has been producing wine for over 2,000 years. With its breathtaking landscapes, fantastic wines and gorgeous weather it is a region not to be missed!  We will visit a beautiful local winery today for some touring & tastings and later enjoy a wonderful lunch which we have included.

DAY 5: Saturday, October 17- PORTO

Today is a free day to take in the sights and wander this lovely city.

DAY 6: Sunday, October 18PORTO- Coimbra, Bussaco, Champagne

Today we combine culture with champagne - a perfect pairing!
We will first visit Coimbra, which was known as "the city of knowledge" during Roman times and still holds true as it is home to one of the oldest, active universities in Europe. In the early 700's it served as a commercial link between the Christian north and Muslim south; by the Late Middle Ages Coimbra evolved into a major cultural center, and the university was established in 1537 where you will visit their famous XVI century library.

Onward next to the Palace Hotel of Bussaco - located in the mountain range of the same name. The hotel was built at the end of the 19th century and is rich with intricate detail and the blue and white azulejos tiles along the lower balcony walk. The area around the Palace was part of a Carmelite convent established in 1628 and the gardens were built to represent 'Earthly Paradise', and are a joy to wander through. A special lunch is included today.
Top the day with a visit to the the region of Espumante - the Portuguese version of Champagne - to learn about their famous wines.... sip a few.

DAY 7: Monday, October 19 - Depart Porto to Lisbon - Nazaré & Óbidos

We depart Porto for a shot drive to Nazare. This ‘once active’ fishing village is now a charming seaside town, and famous for its surfing on world-record size waves. We will enjoy free time here; Nazare is an easy town in which to wander the small shops, walk the beautiful promenade and of course enjoy a bite of lunch. For a slightly different view you can take the short funicular up to Sitio town to see the commemoration chapel; this was built to honour a miraculous intervention in 1182 by the Virgin Mary in saving the life of a 12th-century Portuguese knight. The views are gorgeous from above.

We will also have a short visit in white-washed Obidos - a medieval village full of artisan shops & beauty. When we enter the fortified walls of this well-preserved village it feels as if one has gone back in time. It was originally established by the Romans, then settled by the Moors, next freed under the first Christian conquest and finally later was ‘gifted’ as a honeymoon present from a young king to his young bride. While here we will sample the village’s famous heritage liquor “Ginginha” (served in a chocolate cup) - and hence we shall depart with a sweet memory of this town.

Arrival into Lisbon and we can get settled and relaxed in our gracious hotel - also chosen for its wonderful location on the elegant “Avenida de Liberdade” . Next  I suggest an evening walk to orient ourselves.

4* star Avenida Palace Hotel or similar (7 nights)

DAY 8: Tuesday, October 20 - Lisbon walking tour

Known as the "City of 7 hills" Lisbon has been the capital of Portugal since 1255, and is Europe’s second-oldest capital after Athens. From the Phoenicians, Greeks Romans, Moors, and varying medieval kingdoms both the city & its architecture have a uniquely blended personality - and one found only here on the Iberian Peninsula. This enchanting city was once home to such world famous explorers as Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan and Prince Henry the Navigator.
Our day begins with a guided walking tour (and a fun tuk tuk ride to avoid a big hill or 2) of some of the famous Lisbon sights; along the way we sample  some very tasty authentic Portuguese treats - perhaps even the famous pastel de Belém (custard tart).

The remainder of the afternoon is free.  There are some wonderful museums such as the Museum of Art, the Fado Museum or the interesting National Azulejo Museum ('azulejo' meaning glazed tiles....see Thursday's activity  below). Consider too taking the wrought-iron Santa Justa Lift - Lisbon's only vertical street lift ( this cast iron masterpiece with its filigree detailing was named a national monument in 2002). There are endless options for the afternoon.

DAY 9: Wednesday, October 21 -  Magical Sintra                                                             .
The magic of Sintra! This charming fairy tale hamlet exists within its own special micro climate that transforms this Mediterranean landscape into a lush natural region - where rich gentlemen of times past boasted their wealth by building extravagant residences & palaces, along with gorgeous decorative gardens. We will visit the famous Pena Palace to see some of the opulence of the time. Later we would be remiss if we did not see Cabo do Roca - the most western point in Europe and coined by Lord Byron as "... the most beautiful in the world”. A lovely lunch is included in a restaurant located on a picturesque cliff facing the mighty Atlantic.

DAY 10: Thursday, October 22 - Let's get creative.... Tiles & Wine

If you have read about Portugal, you undoubtedly know the country is famous for its ceramic tiles, called azulejo tiles. I thought it would be fun to further immerse ourselves into the Portuguese culture and therefore today we will each become a ‘tile artist' for the day, and make a traditional ceramic tile.
During this workshop, we will learn different techniques of ceramic tile painting while being assisted in our creations by the master tile maker, who is also a professor at Lisbon's university. Once our ‘masterpieces’ are painted, the tiles will then be baked and then delivered to us 2 days later at our hotel.

After working so hard this morning, we deserve a treat - and what is better than some traditional tapas paired with local wines.
The Lisbon wine region offers an outstanding array of small wine offerings. The northern Atlantic winds are inevitably a feature, adding refined salt aromas; as well, further inland, the small mountain range further offers the right climate conditions to produce both elegant & classy reds, and light whites. We will sample some with our tasty tapas lunch, which is included.     Evening free.

DAY 11: Friday, October 23 -  Évora  – Romans, Celts, wine & cork

Wrapped in Roman walls, surrounded by vineyards, olive and cork trees, and rich in ancient history is the country’s famous region known as the Alentejo region (Alentejo refers to ‘beyond the tagus river’). Within this vast (and sometimes wild) region, the UNESCO World Heritage city of Evora with its fortified walls is a lovely maze of cobbled streets & Gothic architecture where we will enjoy a relaxing walking tour - taking in the Roman temple of Diana, the view of the ancient aqueduct and more.
Given the region’s famed vineyards and cork trees, we must also partake of a local wine tasting, as well as tour the cork factory to learn how they make such amazing cork products from the massive cork trees (note too, they have an extensive gift shop on the premises). A delicious lunch is included today.
Remainder of day free back in Lisbon.

DAY 12: Saturday, October 24 - The seaside and the mountains beckon

Today we leave historical sights behind and instead embrace relaxation. Cliff-top views, seaside wanders & wine tasting... a classic Portuguese combination as we discover the windswept region located a very short driving distance southwest of Lisbon.

Our first visit is to Espichel Cape: a centuries-old point of pilgrimage facing the wild Atlantic with its stunning vistas, abandoned sanctuary (and famous for footprints that actually belonged to Jurassic dinosaurs).

Next is the beach town and fishing village of Sesimbra with its many colourful boats; we enjoy some free time and perhaps a fresh seafood lunch. Afterwards we take a scenic drive along the amazing Arrábida mountain reserve, offering breathtaking ocean views on one side, and mountain vistas on the other; it is truly a Portuguese paradise. This is in a park area, with many species of rare animals - even wild boars.
We wrap up our outing with a wine tasting in a pretty village just south of Lisbon called Azeitão - famous for the Portuguese Muscat (Muscatel) and Azeitão cheeses.
Back in Lisbon later to enjoy the remainder of Saturday in the city with the locals; plenty of free (and good quality) entertainment awaits within the many squares throughout the neighbourhoods.
DAY 13: Sun October 25  - Free day in Lisbon

Lisbon is a wonderful city for wandering, for discovering its many unique neighbourhoods, or finding great leather products or local artisan goods. Other suggestions include a ride on the famous "28" tram, a visit to the wildly popular Time Out Market for an amazing selection of food and wines. Closer to home, the casual 'park-like cafes' along the lovely tiled & tree-lined Avenida de Liberdade are perfect for a late day coffee or glass of wine; these cafes were a favourite spot on previous tours for the ladies to congregate in the late day sunshine.

I suggest we meet up tonight to enjoy one last dinner together while saying "Obrigada Lisboa".

Check out today for transfers that we can arrange directly to Lisbon airport for your return flight back. I hope that you have had a wonderful getaway.

1. take a substitute tour of equivalent or superior quality if the Company is able and willing to offer such a substitute; or

The Company is not responsible for any incidental expenses or consequential losses that the Client may have incurred as a result of the booking such as insurance premiums, visas, vaccinations, non-refundable flights or rail, non refundable car parking or other fees, loss of earnings, or loss of enjoyment, etc. If the Client is offered a refund but requests an alternative tour of a higher value than that originally booked, then the Client must pay the difference in price. The Company reserves the right to increase tour price after the holiday has been booked but will not do so any later than 30 days before the departure date stipulated. After a Confirmation Invoice has been issued any increase to the tour price will be as the result of changes in an increase in transportation costs, including the cost of fuel, dues, taxes or fees chargeable for services such as landing taxes or embarkation or disembarkation fees at ports and airport charges, including any currency fluctuations. If the increase would be 2% or less of the holiday price the Company will absorb the changes in its costs of providing the tour. However if the increase is more than 2% the Company will pass this increase on to the Client.

Where the increase in price is more than 7% of the Clients holiday price then in these circumstances the Clients may either:

1. withdraw from the contract without incurring any penalty; or
2. accept the change of price.

Tours operating in Canada are priced and advertised exclusive of Government taxes (HST, GST, PST & QST) and these taxes will be advised at time of booking and itemized on subsequent invoicing.
